How do students join a task?

Students enter the task’s access code, then their first name. You can add students to an existing task at any time by giving them the code.

Running a lessonstudentsaccess codejoinadd studentsstudent linktasks

Students don’t need an account, and there’s no class list to set up. They enter your task’s access code, then their first name. Each student appears on your task page as soon as they join.

How students join

  • To share a link instead, click Copy student link (the link icon beside the code). A student who opens it starts on Let's start, with the code already filled in.

  • On a phone or a narrow window, the Access code box isn’t shown. Students tap the round key button at the top of the page instead.

  • A Discussion Mode or Draft Mode task opens as soon as they press Continue. In a Defence Mode task, they upload their assignment first, then press Start task.

If your class uses Canvas or another LMS

When the task has been added to a course, students don’t need the code. They open the assignment in the course and click Open my task, which opens the task in a new tab. If your LMS doesn’t share their name with us, they type their first name first. To come back later, they open the same assignment again. Canvas Setup Guide for Teachers shows how to add a task to a course.

Can I add students to an existing task?

Yes. There’s no class list to change. Give the new student the access code or the link, and they join the same way at any time while the task is published. For a student who missed the lesson, see A student missed the lesson. How do they catch up?

If a student can’t get in

  • They see “Waiting for the class to begin”. They have joined, but your session isn’t open. Click Open session or Resume session on the task page. Secure mode tasks, and tasks set to When I open it, start closed until you open them.

  • They’re told the task isn’t available. The task isn’t published. Click Unpublished under the task’s title to publish it.

  • They’re told the task can’t be found. Check the code: capitals matter, so it must be typed exactly as it appears.

  • They started the task earlier. A student coming back uses their own re-entry code, not the task’s access code. Entering the access code and their name again on a different device starts a new, blank copy. See How can my class re-enter a task across multiple lessons?
