A student missed the lesson. How do they catch up?

Absent students can use the same access code at a later date. Let one student in while the class stays paused, reopen their work, or give extra time.

Running a lessonabsent studentscatch upextra timeadd student worktasks

A student who was absent when the class first did a task can complete it at a later date, with the same access code. Tasks have no due date, and there’s no class list to add them to. The student joins and does the work themselves. You can’t add or upload work on their behalf.

Letting an absent student in

Give them the task’s access code, or the link from Copy student link. They join the same way as everyone else (see How do students join a task?). Whether they can start straight away depends on your session:

  • If the task page shows Pause session, the session is open and they can start.

  • If it shows Resume session or Open session, the session is paused. The student can still join, but waits on “Waiting for the class to begin” until you let them in. If the whole class is carrying on with the task, click Resume session.

Letting one student in while the class stays paused

The student appears on your task page as soon as they join. For several students at once, tick their names and click Resume.

Resuming a student lifts the pause on the session as a whole, so anyone who joins after that isn’t held. When they have finished, click Pause session, then Pause now, to hold everyone again.

Giving extra time at a later date

A time limit starts when a student joins and stops while they’re paused, so a student who joins later still gets the full time. If they need more:

  • If they haven’t handed in yet, open the … menu on their row and choose Add time. This option only appears on tasks with a time limit.

  • If they have handed in, click Reopen submission, the unlock button beside their status. This is also the one to use when a Hard stop time limit handed their work in. On a timed task, enter the Extra minutes and click Reopen.

Reopened minutes count from the moment you click Reopen, so reopen the work when the student is ready to start. If they have closed the page, they get back in with their re-entry code. See How can my class re-enter a task across multiple lessons?

A student who missed the Draft

A Defence Mode task linked to a Draft looks for each student’s draft when they join. A student who missed the Draft has two options:

  • Do the Draft task first, then the Defence. This keeps the two linked.

  • Start the Defence without a draft. Turn on Allow entry without a draft near the top of the Defence task’s page, and the student is offered a way to continue without one. They appear in your list with a “No draft” label.

Good to know

  • If you unpublished the task after the lesson, publish it again first: click Unpublished under the task’s title.

  • If the student is told the task is full, it has reached its seat limit, and your task page shows “Seat limit reached”. Delete a student entry you don’t need to make space, or contact us.

  • Students in Canvas or another LMS don’t need the code. They open the assignment in their course, and pausing, resuming and extra time work the same way.
