How do students have replies read aloud?

Thinking Mode can read the tutor’s replies out loud. Turn it on for a task and each student gets a Listen button on every reply, and can choose to have new replies read to them automatically as they arrive.

It is a reading support, not an assessment change: the questions and the conversation are identical either way. It helps students who read slowly, students with low vision or dyslexia, and younger classes working through a long reply.

• Automatic reading starts off for every student and each student turns it on for themselves, so a room full of devices never starts talking at once. Headphones are worth mentioning to the class.

• Reading aloud works on its own. You do not need Speak answers switched on as well, though the two are often used together.

• It is available in Discussion and Defence Mode tasks. It is not yet in Draft Mode.
