LTI Integration — Schoolbox Setup Guide
Connect Thinking Mode to Schoolbox via LTI 1.3 — for school IT teams.
This guide is for your school’s Schoolbox administrator. It adds Thinking Mode to Schoolbox as an LTI 1.3 tool. Teachers and students can then open Thinking Mode from Schoolbox, and teachers can post each student’s grade and a comment back to the matching Schoolbox assessment. Files such as transcripts can’t be sent to Schoolbox: only Canvas accepts them.
You need access to Administration in Schoolbox. Schoolbox’s own instructions are at Configuring LTI Tools in Schoolbox, under Add an LTI 1.3 Provider.
We are happy to assist with this process. If you have any questions or would like guidance through the installation, please email support@thinkingmode.com
Part 1: Add Thinking Mode in Schoolbox
Step 1. Open Administration, then LMS, then LTI Tools.
Step 2. At the top of the page, check that Enable 3rd Party Assessments is On. If you turn it on, click Save. Without it, teachers can’t add Thinking Mode to an assessment.
Step 3. Click the + beside LTI Tools to add a tool. Under LTI Tool Identity, enter:
Name: Thinking Mode
Version: 1.3
Step 4. Under Tool Configuration, copy in the following. These are the current addresses for your Thinking Mode site:
OpenID Connect Initiation URL:

Additional Redirect URL(s): click Add Redirect URL and enter
https://thinkingmode.com/wp-json/socraticxr-lti/v1/redirect
Step 5. Under Availability, tick 3rd Party Assessments only and leave Homepage Components unticked. Set Target to New tab/window, so Thinking Mode opens in its own tab.
Step 6. Click Create Tool.
Part 2: Send us your Schoolbox connection details
Step 7. Click Thinking Mode in the list of LTI tools to open it. Its Schoolbox Instance Details section now includes a Client/Deployment ID. We need these values to register your school in Thinking Mode. Please copy each one and email them to support@thinkingmode.com:
Issuer
OpenID Connect Authentication URL
OAuth Access Token URL
JSON Web Key Set URL
Client/Deployment ID
Each of those fields has a Copy button in Schoolbox, so the quickest approach is to copy and paste them straight into your email to us.
Part 3: We confirm, then you test
Step 8. We register your school and reply within 2 business days to confirm it is ready to test.
Step 9. As a teacher, add Thinking Mode to an assessment using the steps below. The first time a teacher opens Thinking Mode from Schoolbox without a Thinking Mode account, we email them a link to confirm their account. They click the link, then add Thinking Mode to the assessment again. After that, it opens straight to the task picker.
If you hit an error at any point, copy it and send it to us and we will help.
Adding Thinking Mode to a Schoolbox assessment
Teachers do this in each class:
In the class’s course outline, open the menu beside a unit and choose 3rd Party Assessment.
Enter a Title and choose a Work Type. Under Learning Tool, choose Thinking Mode. The Thinking Mode task picker opens.
Pick a task and click Use this task.
Click Create. Students open the task from the assessment with Attempt Activity.
To send results back, open the student’s results in Thinking Mode, score the rubric or write a comment, and click Post to Schoolbox. The score and comment show in Schoolbox straight away, even if you haven’t released results in Thinking Mode. Who can see them there is set by Feedback Visibility on the Schoolbox assessment.
